At Aesthetic Smiles, we are committed to investing in the latest technology. We are one of the few practices in the Leicestershire area to have a 3D CT scanner, which is used for diagnostic purposes and to assist in a range of dental treatments, such as the placement of dental implants.

Many other dental practices in the area refer their patients to us for a CT scan. If you are a dentist who would like to refer a patient to us, please visit our Referring Dentists page and complete the online form.

Dental cone beam CT scanners are compact versions of regular CT scanners used in hospitals. The machine moves in a circular motion around your head and uses a cone-shaped x-ray beam to create 3D cross-sectional images of your teeth and jaws. By using a cone-shaped x-ray beam, the amount of radiation, the time needed for scans and the size of the machine are all greatly reduced.

Dental CT scans provide your dentist with vital information that cannot be obtained with regular x-rays, helping to diagnose a range of conditions and assisting in the placement of dental implants. This is a safe procedure carried out by fully qualified professionals. You will be sitting up during the procedure and will not be placed inside a machine, rather the machine will move around your head. Please be sure to tell your dentist if you are, or think you may be, pregnant, as you would with any procedure involving x-rays.

Reasons you may need a dental CT scan

Placing dental implants

Placing dental implants requires meticulous planning. The 3D scanner gives your dentist a clear view of your jaw bone, bone shape and bone density, meaning that the placement of your implants will be precisely planned before surgery, avoiding any nerves or nasty surprises. It also helps to check that you have enough bone to support dental implants, or if you require a bone graft or sinus lift.

Bone grafts and sinus lifts

If you require a bone graft or sinus lift, a CT scan may be used to assess your current bone density, and/or to explore the anatomy of your sinus cavity. This will enable us to check that you are suitable for a sinus lift and to plan the procedure carefully.

Impacted teeth

A CT scan may be necessary if you have an impacted wisdom tooth. The scan gives a clear view of the tooth and any surrounding structures prior to extraction.

Root canal treatment

A CT scan can help give a clearer view of the root canal, making treatment planning safer and easier.

Orthodontics

A single 3D scan can help with the diagnosis and treatment of a range of orthodontic conditions, enabling us to see both jaws together.

3DCT scanning offers unparalleled accuracy in planning dental implant procedures. Dentists can assess bone density, identify optimal implant sites, and simulate the entire implant process virtually before the actual surgery. This level of precision significantly improves the success rate of implant treatments and reduces potential complications.

Orthodontic analysis and simulation

For orthodontic treatments, 3DCT scans provide detailed information about tooth positioning, root alignment, and jaw relationships. This data enables orthodontists to create more accurate treatment plans and even simulate the expected outcomes of different approaches, allowing for more informed decision-making.

Advancements in Surgical Planning with 3DCT Scanners

The integration of 3DCT scanning in surgical planning has transformed complex dental procedures, making them safer and more predictable.

Virtual surgical guides

Using 3DCT scan data, dentists can create virtual surgical guides for procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction or periodontal surgery. These guides help navigate complex anatomical structures, reducing the risk of complications and improving overall surgical outcomes.

Craniofacial reconstruction planning

For patients requiring extensive dental or facial reconstruction, 3DCT technology allows for detailed pre-operative planning. Surgeons can visualise and plan intricate procedures with unprecedented accuracy, leading to better functional and aesthetic results.

Enhanced Patient Communication Through 3DCT Imaging

3DCT scanning has significantly improved the way dentists communicate with their patients about oral health issues and treatment options.

Visual patient education

The 3D models generated by CT scans serve as powerful visual aids, allowing patients to better understand their dental conditions and proposed treatments. This improved comprehension often leads to increased treatment acceptance and compliance.

Treatment outcome visualisation

Some 3DCT software enables the creation of simulations that show patients potential treatment outcomes. This feature is particularly valuable for cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic treatments, helping patients make more informed decisions about their care.

Streamlined Workflow with 3DCT Scanning Technology

The integration of 3DCT scanning into dental practices has led to more efficient workflows and improved patient experiences.

Digital impression capabilities

Many 3DCT scanners can capture highly accurate digital impressions, eliminating the need for traditional moulding materials. This not only improves patient comfort but also reduces chair time and enhances the precision of dental prosthetics.

Seamless digital integration

3DCT scan data can be easily integrated with other digital dental technologies, such as CAD/CAM systems for creating custom restorations. This seamless digital workflow improves efficiency and accuracy in the fabrication of crowns, bridges, and other dental appliances.

Radiation Considerations in 3DCT Scanning vs Traditional Methods

While 3DCT scanning offers numerous advantages, it’s important to consider radiation exposure in comparison to traditional imaging methods.

Dose optimisation techniques

Modern 3DCT scanners employ advanced dose optimisation techniques that significantly reduce radiation exposure compared to older CT technologies. In many cases, the radiation dose from a 3DCT scan is comparable to a full series of traditional dental X-rays, while providing far more comprehensive information.

Selective use protocols

Dental professionals follow strict protocols to ensure 3DCT scanning is used selectively, balancing the need for detailed imaging with the principle of keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). This approach ensures that patients benefit from advanced diagnostics without unnecessary radiation exposure.

The advancements offered by 3DCT scanning in dental care are transformative, providing unprecedented levels of diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning precision, and patient engagement. From improved surgical outcomes to enhanced patient communication, this technology has elevated the standard of dental care across various specialities. As 3DCT scanning continues to evolve, we can expect further innovations that will make dental treatments even more predictable, efficient, and patient-friendly, ultimately leading to better oral health outcomes for patients.
