Everyone wants a cracking smile and many people are very happy to invest in treatments to improve the aesthetics of their teeth to get it. But how many are also willing to pay to keep their teeth strong and healthy?
At Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester, we place as much emphasis on general dentistry as we do on cosmetic dentistry. We can’t give cosmetic dental treatments to people unless their teeth are in good condition.
The teeth would only continue to decay or fall out from gum disease despite their apparent beauty.
So, if it’s been a while since you came in for a check-up and session with the hygienist, and you are thinking of getting a cosmetic dental treatment, let’s get you up to date with your dental health first.
We like patients to have 2 check-ups and cleaning sessions a year, unless your circumstances require you to have them more often. For example, if you have diabetes, are a smoker or are pregnant, you may need to have more frequent check-ups.
During your check-up, we will gently probe your teeth for decay and also take a good look at your gums for early or advanced gum disease.
If you are older, we may also do a check for oral cancer.
Decay, gum disease and oral cancers are all easy to treat in their early stages, but as time goes by and they are left unchecked, treatment gets more invasive and more expensive. The end game for your teeth is extraction, but for oral cancer, it can kill people.
Good reasons to come in and get checked and cleaned. The hygienist can also suggest ways to improve your cleaning skills, especially if you have restorations such as veneers, crowns, bridges or dental implants, or if you have braces.
Healthy teeth don’t always look so great, it’s true. So, if you have good dental hygiene, you can then think about taking advantage of our great cosmetic dental treatments.
We can chat about what you’d like to have done during your check-up, or you can come in for a consultation for a smile makeover.

What’s been putting you off getting your teeth straightened? Is it that you think straightening is only for kids? Or maybe you have an image that you need to keep up for work? Or maybe you just can’t face taking more than a year out of your life to go through a treatment? Or is it the comments that you just know will come flooding at you?
If any or all of these are reasons you have continued to live unhappily with your wonky teeth, then you’ll be glad to hear that at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester we have braces that solve all of these problems. They are called Six Month Smiles. Want to find out more? Great. We’re dying to tell you all about them.
Not just for kids
Let’s be clear. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can still get your teeth straightened. All it takes is sustained pressure on your teeth and the jawbone will work to relieve that pressure by shifting the teeth out of its way. It’s a matter of dissolving and rebuilding the bone, and it can be done at any age, although it does take longer as you get older.
Keeping up a professional image
No one is going to call you brace face or Metal Micky with Six Month Smiles because these ultra-discreet braces are made from small clear ceramic brackets strung together with one wire that is coated in a tooth-coloured material. The whole effect means the braces blend in with your teeth rather than overwhelming them.
A matter of time
Six Month Smiles are so-called because that is the average amount of time they take to move your front 6-8 teeth into alignment. It could take as little as 4 months or as long as 9, but no longer. So, treatment is over almost before it’s begun.
If anyone does comment on your braces, they’ll have to be up close to see them and they are more likely to say, “Wow! What brilliant braces! Where can I get them?” than anything else.
Want to find out more? Give us a call and book a consultation. You’ll soon be on your way to a fabulous new smile.
Spring is arriving. Fresh snowdrops are flowering under trees, the first brave daffs are showing up in some gardens. It won’t be long before new grass greens over muddy verges, and everything starts to look new and fresh again. Will your face be looking new and fresh too, or will it still look like it needs another few months in hibernation?
If your face doesn’t bounce back like it used to then perhaps it’s time to do something about those lines. There are certain lines on the face that are there because your muscles are holding them in place. You may not realise it, but you are habitually contracting them, creating those crow’s feet, those worry or frown lines. If you could just relax for a few days, they would smooth out.
It sounds easy but it’s almost impossible to consciously relax those muscles, which is why people seek the help of botulinum toxin. This is the long name for Botox, a purified form of the botulinum type A toxin.
Botox started out as a way to suppress excessive sweating, but doctors quickly discovered that the people who received this treatment lost their wrinkles in the injected area too. Now, Botox has been around for a long time, smoothing out faces around the globe.
Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerve to the muscle so that it cannot contract. We inject just the right tiny amount to gradually relax the muscle, which takes about a week in all, but not totally paralyse it. We want you to look relaxed, not frozen.
Botulinum toxin works really well on those areas around the eyes, but people also use it to relax the areas around the lips.
It takes only a few minutes to administer your treatment, so you can get it done at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester when you are out shopping, or in your lunch hour. You won’t see any difference to start with but over the next week, your lines will smooth out.
Treatment lasts about 4 months, so come in for a top-up after 3 months if you like what you see and want some more.
If you have damaged a tooth in an accident, or it is beginning to fall apart for some other reason, at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester, we can help you hang onto it for longer by fitting you with a crown. The great news is that, if you do need a crown, we can fit it in one day, instead of you having to wait a couple of weeks.
Crowns work in the same way as veneers, in that they disguise damage and protect the tooth by covering it. The big difference is that veneers only cover the front of the tooth, whereas crowns cover over the whole tooth. Both require removal of tooth materials before fitting.
Teeth damaged in accidents
It’s not at all unusual to sustain damage to your front teeth. Plenty of people chip and crack them while playing sports, skateboarding, cycling or just mucking around, especially as youngsters at school.
Very often this can be fixed by covering the front of the tooth with a veneer, but if the damage is more severe, and affects the back of the tooth as well, it is probably better to have a crown fitted.
Teeth that are crumbling away
There comes a time when a tooth is more filling than tooth. When this happens, it is no longer a sensible option to keep adding more filling, especially if the tooth is starting to split. This scenario often happens with people who have fillings in their back teeth and are also prone to grinding their teeth at night. When the chewing part of the tooth is starting to fail, but there is still a healthy root underneath it, having a crown fitted can strengthen the tooth and give a longer life.
Introducing our Cerec machine
We can make you a new crown in around an hour, thanks to our Cerec machine. We scan your mouth and do a colour match, then programme the Cerec machine to make your new crown. No messing around with temporary crowns while you wait for the lab to make your permanent one.

Most of us have got one or 2 things about our teeth that we’d like to upgrade, but if you are very unhappy about how yours look, then maybe you need to think about getting a smile makeover.
A smile makeover is different from just getting a couple of cosmetic treatments done. If you want your whole smile transformed, you are best off taking it along to a properly trained cosmetic dentist, such as us at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester.
General dentists are looking at your teeth from a health point of view. Cosmetic dentists are trained to look at teeth in a different way. We see teeth as things of beauty. Where a general dentist will automatically assess your teeth for decay and gum disease, we can’t help but notice if they are the right, size, shape and colour for your mouth. We see if your teeth are too big for your face, or your face is too big for your teeth. We see if your teeth not only line up well together, but whether they are in harmony with each other size-wise.
The smile makeover consultation
When you come for a consultation for a smile makeover, we want to know all about what you’re unhappy with, and also what your dreams are regarding your smile. We will then carry out an in-depth examination of your teeth, mouth and face and then draw up a treatment plan to give you what we think is the best makeover programme for you. It could be a simple pair of treatments, or a more complex series of treatments that take several months to complete.
What treatments you may have
Almost everyone’s smile makeover includes teeth whitening, which removes stains that build up after eating and drinking certain things, such as red wine. But when you have whitening will depend on what other treatments you are having. Dental porcelain can’t be bleached, so if you are having veneers, crowns, or dental implants, you will need to have your teeth whitened first and the porcelain matched to them.
Why not come in for a chat and see what we can do for you?
You can spend all the money you like on teeth whitening, veneers and all the other wonderful cosmetic dentistry treatments we offer here at Aesthetic Smiles, but if the fundamentals of your smile are not in place, you might as well throw your money down the drain.
Behind every really good smile is good oral health, and that’s why here at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester, we place great emphasis on our general dentistry treatments.
General dentistry covers all aspects of dentistry that form the basis of keeping your teeth and mouth in good condition. It starts with regular check-ups and plaque removal appointments, but it also covers remedial treatments. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer:
One aspect of your mouth that it is very easy to forget to take care of is your gums. When we are young, it’s all about cavities and avoiding tooth decay, but as we move into and through adulthood, we are far more likely to get gum disease.
At Aesthetic Smiles, we have a range of treatments to take care of gum disease, from its milder forms to the advanced stages that can lead to tooth loss. Keep gum disease at bay with regular scale and polish sessions to remove any build-up of plaque.
Your teeth can get infected on the inside when there is decay or they get damaged. If you have an infection, we can treat it by removing the infected pulp (the soft inner core) and replacing it with filling material. We then put a crown over the tooth to protect it.
Crowns and bridges
If you have a damaged tooth that still has a healthy root, you are better off trying to hang on to it, as your jawbone needs tooth roots in it to keep it strong and healthy. We can cover your tooth with a crown to keep it strong and make it last longer. If you do lose a tooth or 2, we can give you a bridge to replace them.
We also offer partial and full dentures to replace lost teeth. These are artificial teeth on a plate that you remove at night to clean and rest your gums.
Worldwide, mouth cancers are the 6th most common types of cancer. They are directly linked to lifestyle causes and that means as you get older, you have more chance of developing them. So, unless you have been a teetotal, non-smoking, super-slim, vegan who has never had sex, you are at risk. If you are not one of the above (do you even know any?) and are over 35, then you need to make sure you have a mouth cancer screening in Leicester with us at Aesthetic Smiles once a year.
What are mouth and throat cancers?
Mouth and throat cancers occur when cells get damaged and start to grow out of control, forming tumours. They tend to show up on the upper throat, the mouth lining, the tongue, lips, tonsils and gums.
Drinking and smoking damages cells and exposes them directly the carcinogens in alcohol and tobacco. Also, some scientists think that alcohol can act as a solvent and help other dietary or environmental cancer-causing chemicals to enter the cells.
Who gets mouth cancers?
If you smoke and drink, you are even more likely to develop mouth cancer.
You are more likely to get mouth cancers if you are male, and if you are infected with the HPV virus. Being overweight also increases your chances.
Mouth cancer screening
We can do your screening after one of your bi-annual check-ups. We will carefully check inside your mouth, using a small mirror to look at less easy-to-see places such as under your tongue. Once we have checked your mouth, we will also use our fingertips to carefully feel through your neck to the top of your throat to check there is nothing untoward going on their either.
We will also ask you if you have noticed anything odd, such as a suddenly hoarse voice, or a tingly lip, or areas going numb.
Easy to treat
Mouth cancers that are caught early are usually treated very easily. Small lumps can just be cut out.
If you do suspect you have symptoms, don’t wait until you are due your next screening, come in and see us right away.
Watch a bit of TV, especially a reality show, and you will notice what lovely, gleaming, well-ordered smiles everyone has these days, especially those under the age of 40. Were they born this way? Nope. They have had the beauty of their smiles brought out with cosmetic dental treatments, such as the ones we are famous for here at Aesthetic Smiles.
Having a smile that you can feel great is about is important, but if you want to keep it that way, it’s not cosmetic dentistry you need, it’s general dentistry, and that’s why we deliver both to such high standards here in Leicester.
What is general dentistry in Leicester?
This is the umbrella term for all the treatments and checks that go into maintaining great smiles. And it all starts with the check-up.
You should be coming for one of these every 6 months. We examine your teeth and mouth for the beginnings of any problems, such as decay, gum disease and mouth cancer. If we spot issues that we think need treatment, we will discuss them with you and if agreed, send you a written treatment plan, including costings.
General dentistry treatments
The 2 main enemies of a great smile are gum disease and tooth decay, both are caused by bacterial plaque that builds up on the teeth and gives off erosive acids. Our general dentistry treatments are all to do with keeping these issues at bay, and dealing with them when they do appear, whether at an early or advanced stage.
In children, who are still developing their toothbrushing skills, we help protect teeth with fluoride treatments to make their enamel more resistant to acid attack, and fissure sealants to protect vulnerable back teeth.
In adults, our general treatments are more concerned with repairing problems. That means filling cavities, and when teeth start to fail, strengthening them with crowns.
Teeth do get knocked out and they also fail, so general dentistry also covers replacing teeth with bridges and dentures.
Teeth also get infected and we can save teeth with root canal therapy.
General dentistry is the foundation of your smile. Don’t forget to come and see us.
Instilling lifelong habits for taking good care of yourself starts in childhood. This is make-or-break time for so many things because children absorb what is going on around them and then copy it for the rest of their lives. That’s why, if you want your child to have great dental health throughout their lives, it’s up to you as a parent to find a dentist that offers good children’s dentistry in Leicester and then bring them along for regular check-ups.
Mastering the art of the toothbrush
It takes a while to learn how to brush your teeth. Here at Aesthetic Smiles in Leicester, we can teach your child the best ways to hold a toothbrush and how to get at all those teeth, even the ones at the back so that they remove all the plaque. We can make it fun too, so that your little ones can enjoy gaining the discipline to stand still for 2 minutes twice a day – a tall order for most kids.
Check-out the check-up
Whether or not your child grows up to be scared of the dentist depends on what happens to them as a very small person. The best way to get them to form the habit of coming for twice-yearly check-ups is to start bringing them along as soon as you can after they are born. Bring them to your own appointments, as well as those of any older siblings. If they can get used to the dental environment and see you in the dentist’s chair all relaxed and having a positive experience, it won’t be long before they want to have a go themselves.
The sugar trap
Sugar is the big enemy of teeth. It feeds the bacteria that live in our mouths and they give off acids that cause decay and gum disease. Kids tend to suffer from much more decay because they consume more sugary snacks and drinks and aren’t so good at tooth brushing yet.
We can help you prevent decay in your children’s teeth with fluoride treatments to harden the enamel, and fissure sealants to create a protective coating over the teeth.
No one likes the effects that ageing has on the face. We get told off for having been in the sun too much and not eating the right foods, but everyone gets wrinkles. There are some that we can help you with if you want facial rejuvenation in Leicester.
At Aesthetic Smiles, we appreciate that sometimes having a great set of teeth can only make the wrinkles look more wrinkly, but there is a way to smooth them away without having to go as far as surgery. Here, we have put our in-depth knowledge of the head and neck and our skills with a needle to great use by now offering Botox.
Botox has become mainstream and it is now widely accepted as a safe way to smooth away wrinkles and lines caused by muscles that we habitually contract. We don’t mean to create crow’s feet by screwing up our eyes to peer at things, or by smiling and laughing. It isn’t our intention to add frown lines to our faces when we concentrate or worry lines above our brows, but we do.
However, with Botox injections, we can help you gently and subtly smooth away those wrinkles, and even smoker’s lines around your mouth, in a process that develops over the course of a week or so.
How Botox works
The Botulinum type A toxin was originally used to stop excessive sweating but it was discovered that it also worked really well on lines and was marketed as Botox. We inject just the right amount of Botox into the area of your wrinkle. It blocks the signalling pathway between the nerve and muscle and slowly the muscle smooths out. We can make sure you can still make natural expressions but you won’t be able to hold the muscle in constant, subconscious tension anymore.
The gradual development means that friends and family may not even consciously notice that you’ve had Botox, just that you are looking more refreshed than usual.
Botox treatments last for about four months, and at Aesthetic Smiles, we recommend that you come in for a top-up treatment after three months, if you like the results.
